The glories of Yeston’s craftsmanship are honored fully on Signature Theatre’s stage, in director Eric Schaeffer’s splendidly sung — and steered — revival in the company’s Max theater. Configuring the seating on all four sides of Paul Tate dePoo III’s innovative set, a design dominated by a network of nautical gangplanks and bridges splicing the air, Schaeffer places the audience within virtual arm’s length of the action.
- Washington Post - Peter Marks
Schaeffer’s physical production – a feather in the cap of scenic designer Paul Tate Depoo III – while large on size, depends on the audience’s willingness to fill in the the broad strokes with their own imagination. This audience member, for one, was a willing passenger on that ride.
- DC Theatre Scene
Schaeffer worked with Paul Tate dePoo III to create an in-the-round open stage. Rather than attempt to replicate the RMS Titanic on stage, Schaeffer and dePoo effectively conjure the ocean liner through the ingenious use of gangplanks and bridges, used by actors as the ship’s various decks.
- Metro Weekly
Paul Tate DePoo III's nautical scenic design isn't only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional with all of the gangways. It helps Schaeffer keep the focus on the story and those experiencing 'the floating city.'
- Broadway World
The grandeur of Paul Tate DePoo III’s scenic design is breathtaking on multiple levels. There is an inherent simplicity to the gangplanks that arch upward into the unseen catwalk and overhang above the space, crafting the illusion of the ship’s tremendous magnitude. The eponymous nature of the ship itself is fabricated in the gaps of the mind’s eye on DePoo’s set; the imagination connects the dots of the blueprint, filling in the majesty with the assistance of Lighting Designer Amanda Zieve. Simple elegance graces DePoo’s set, augmented by Zieve’s carefully crafted lighting plots, which are designed to capture moments of breathtaking beauty and heart-stopping experience.
- Theatre Bloom
Signature tackles the musical with typical quality and grace. From the set design to the lighting to the effects, the whole thing feels wonderfully grand in a theater that seats an intimate 350.
